Possibly more photos than you can be bothered to look at ....

.... and not a single one of them a monkee. Shocking.

If you're only here for the monkees you may want to skip this and come back next time, when normal monkee service will resume. But, if like me, you like looking at other people's photographs (I'm a freak, I know .... or possibly just very nosey), and could maybe spare a few minutes at the end to help settle an argument, I'd be grateful.

I like to take photos and then I like to edit photos to (hopefully) enhance them. But it seems that what I see on my laptop screen may not be entirely accurate. When we went to Prague last year I took 200+ pictures, then edited them, and then spent around twenty quid having them all printed out .... wanna come see my holiday photos??

They turned out a tad on the gare-ish side ....

.... mind you, sometimes gare-ish is good ....

Since that unfortunate incident, RGH thinks I shouldn't edit my photos, and thinks I should just leave them in their original, straight-out-of-the-camera form.

But I disagree. Surely all pictures are edited? Imagine picking up the latest celebrity magazine and seeing un-airbrushed celebs, or the Sunday supplements having un-doctored pictures. Wouldn't it be a bit .... dull?

Anyway. Since I've discovered Picasa I've tried to be a bit more subtle in my photo editing, sometimes just using the "I feel lucky" tool to automatically adjust them, but often using other effects.

Here are some before (or I feel luckied) shots, followed by the - sometimes heavily - edited ones ....

.... and here are a few lots more, Picasa'd to within an inch of their lives ....

(you see? I told you there were a lot ....)

RGH asked me not to edit his photos. So I didn't ....

.... for about five minutes ....

(better, no?)

I may have accidentally done one ....

.... or two more ....

So. What do you think? Am I right, or is he wrong? Any advice would be gratefully accepted and acted upon .... unless you're agreeing with him .....

Despite both girls being at the same school and only one year apart, RBD1 is staying home today due to the teacher's strike, but RBD2 has to go in. You can imagine how RBD2 feels about that ....

With all do respect RGH, without photo surgery, none of us would want to open up a magazine.

Can you imagine George Clooney with a giant pimple on his nose gracing the cover of Vanity Fair?

What would HP32's adventure to Singapore be without your wife's editing genius?

Some photos do need photoshop but not all, but thats just my humble opinion. Sometimes its good to see the photos straight from the camera. I don't usually do much more than crop the images but then perhaps that shows..... Jane x

sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I usually crop but don't figure that as editing, more an artistic necessity.

The joy of Picasa is that it lets one unedit soooo easily that it is almost a shame to leave them untouched after the initial view.

I think this is the crux of digital photography as art (and before you naysay MM you really ARE an artist), to manipulate or not?

Personally I'm not a snob about it (obv. no offence intended RGH ;-}) but if I hit the 'Lucky' button and the differenece is invisible or minimal I usually leave it alone.

P.S. RBD2? That really sucks!

I much prefer the editted ones. I am just starting to edit mine and often wonder how they look on other peoples computers. Not one for printing them out but might just give it a go this year.
We've been lucky with the strike the boys school have organised people to come in a do things with the kids so Matt is having an English workshop ready for his SATs with a drama group which cost me £2.50 and Kyle is doing a sponsered something or other for Lepra which cost me £10 in donations! Better than having them at home and having to take time of work though! x

I too have this trouble. I edit away on my lap top, upload them, then when I get to work and view them on a 'proper' monitor they look over saturated and over contrasted (is that a word?). Its a bugger int it. I have to try and remember that things are more wishy washy on here and not to be so heavy handed.

That aside, those photos are amazing, which reminds me, make time for HSMS - your photos were ace!

Both my kidlies are at school today although all the other classes seem to be off.....

I am SO going to stay out of this 'domestic' (but I reckon if they are YOUR photos, you get to do what you like to them...yes?) As for the teachers strike....I live between 7 schools (in less than a square half mile!) for all ages and it is fantastic when they are off, I can actually walk on the pavement and park in my unblocked drive and sleep during the day when I'm on nights....bring back catchment areas: say I, whose children are all safely grown and out of the education system!!!

Yes, you're right, I could move! I will soon, too, I just need to get it all organised!

I prefer edited photos, although I have to admit I hardly ever edit mine before uploading them to my blog; they come straight from my phone... Hmmm... must make the effort more often :)

As for the strike... I'd rather be in work today really...lol.

I'm all for editing, especially for screen viewing, and you are good at it. If I want photos printing, I print my own, because I know my monitor and my printer are singing from the same hymn book. Your monitor/PS colour profiles may bear no relation to the colour profiles in a printshop.
Keep RGH happy by saving a copy of his photos and tweaking them to your hearts content...

hmm I say whatever rocks your boat go with that ! I love your photography btw with or without a monkey :D

Edited looks good to me, but I'm way too thick to try it myself (and I can't be arsed).

I would say do a separate folder full of copied images so you have a his and hers folder, but I know that'd be too much hassle, so I won't lol.

Ummmmmmmmmmmm, do I have to answer this one?

Thinks hard to herself and finally has to say

"Dunno Miss. Sorry Miss"

Ditto the problem with school - Fred's whole school is closed but in Daisy and Dorothy's school only two teachers are on strike so Dot had to go while Daisy stayed off with Fred - but don't worry, I'm making them tidy their bedroom as a treat!

Its easy to get carried away with Picaso, I do it all the time, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. I do think it is good to sharpen images before uploading as they seem to lose this during the process, same for the contrast, this sounds as if I actually know what I am talking about but its really waffle. Am so jealous of your Prague pictures, was looking at flights to Prague the other day and wishing "if only".

I go for the edited versions everytime! Don't you wish you could do it to real life as well as photos?

The doctored ones are very glamorous. I guess it is up to you as they are yours!

I'm not saying this because I didn't get that little green monkey for Stella's Brthday and to compensate for her only daugher leaving home but I'm with your husband on this one.
Like all great photographers of the past (ha ha ha) I only crop but also because I don't have Photoshop or similar.

Anonymous said...

I only crop as well. And I always keep my original images intact. Your photos are terrific.

I go through stages of editing and not. I love looking at other peoples photos too!! So am I nosey too?
I must say atleast you have photos to edit. I went on holiday a fortnight ago and took 623 photos with my lovely new camera. The photos were fantastic (more to do with the camera than my expertise!) Sadly my memory card didnt like my camera and I only have 23 photos left of our holiday...the rest are gone for ever. I am gutted. My blog is almost empty becos I have NO PHOTOS :¬(
Finally my secondary school is shut today due to the strike to pupils, however I work there but belong to a different union so I had to go in. NOW THAT IS UNFAIR!

As a photo-tamperer (I'm especially fond of the brightness/contrast thingy) I would say you're right. Sometimes you have to give nature a hand to look its best and you're not going to find perfect lighting in the cloudy UK. How photos come back from the developy place depends on where you send them. I find that they always look totally different edited or not.
Picasa away I say!

Mrs Moog said...

Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. I do a fair bit of cropping and have just discovered how to lighten and brighten a bit in photoshop which can really make all the difference between ok photo and great photo.

Your photos, while obviously suffering from a severe lack of monkees, are fab missus - you have an eye for a good photo!!

xxx

p.s. today's strike - Minx in school (infants) - Monster off school as year 3 was the only one with striking teachers - good job Moogsdad was willing to lose a day's annual leave of which HE only gets 25 a year .....and not 65. He also gets less than inflation pay rises but can't strike ........... don't start me off as I don't want to upset any teacher bloggers.....
ouch, just fell off my soapbox....limps away muttering....

Oh I don't know.... some look good edited some don't... my moto is if it makes you happy do it....
commiseration to RBD2 ..... RBD1 should have spent the day reading school books just to keep the peace Haa Haa fat chance.

I think you've made your point. I do like what you've done with the photos. If they were all family photos, I'd probably say leave them as they are. But these are more interesting with what you've changed. Good luck with the strike. I hate hearing that it affects the kids but I guess that's how they make their point!

The photos are absolutely lovely!!! (even though there were no monkee ones)

Dear MM -

Fab work re: your newest images!

As under-secretary of your fan club, I'd suggest a gallery showing toot-sweet.

xoxoxo,

ps: signed MM memorabilia humbly accepted.

editing done well (as you have done) is fab, but sometimes unedited ones are great too.

yes that's a rather large fence I'm sitting on, but I brought a cushion so I'm okay.

well, being a tactful, empathic person, who can usually see multiple sides of a question, i'd have to say that both points have merit: thus, you ARE right, but then, RGH *is* wrong as well! :) (yeah...this tact business...it's not hard really, is it?!)

of course, i am firmly in the "a little editing is good and a lot is better, and too much is VERY cool--alllll cows SHOULD be blue!" camp, m'self. but then the great thing about digital is: you can save them BOTH WAYS, right?!

gotta run...i'm off to HAVE some cake...and *eat* it too... :)

I like yours better :/

OK, so I'm a little behind - sorry - but I will throw in my tuppence-worth and say I do really like your edited photos. But then again, I like most of your photos pre-editing too.

So let's just say that I think editing definitely has its merits... especially for those of us who are not gifted in the "making photos look nice straight out of the camera in the first place" department...
